    Help! Standard Brakes + £1000 = ?

Right then. I’ve got a budget in the region of a £1000, which I want to spend on improving my brakes. They are still totally standard, and today have just failed an MOT. So now seems like a good time to upgrade. I’ve also got the annoying “achtung!” auto-check thing flashing at me on start up, so I’m thinking the bomb is going to need doing sometime too.
I’ve got 17” Porsche Cup RS2 look-a-like wheels, 5x112mm PCD. I think some nice Porsche Big Reds would look nice behind my wheels, although I’m not sure looks count towards performance, so other suggestions are very welcome.
I’d be very glad of any helpful advice or solutions.

    Cheers.

Get a clean bill of health on your hydraulics first - the bomb, brake servo and PAS pump. Those alone could eat a significant portion of your 1k budget. After that, then you have lots of options for those 17" wheels.

          Try to find used Porsche callipers. From a 928 S4, a 944 turbo or a 968 CS.
In combination with new A8 discs (314 x 30 mm, machined down to 304 mm) and the stock RS2 brackets it's a big improvement.

Here in Holland i payed about 700 euro's for this setup.

(New Brembo discs, New Textar (original Porsche) pads and used 928 S4 callipers)

          A real improvement.

It fits behind a 17 " wheel, as you see.

                But why do smaller rotor.

996/boxsterS Used (take 1mm off the pins)
323x30 A8 rotor (no machining on the rotor)
                RS2 carriers
                Bolts
VW 400mm long hardline bent to fit
                Mintex red pads

                $925
They can have my car when they pry my cold dead fingers from the steering wheel.

I just want to get a kit to bolt straight on,,, no faffing around buying from eBay and so on, but thats because I'm lazy

They also do the AP/Willwood racing stuff, but Lee may be able to do them cheaper..

"Bibby" on here has used this company, and had good results.

But then again,,,,Tim's new big brake kit looks a good route too Bloody brakes

My Porsche 996 upgrade on the old S2 cost me £450 and made a dramatic difference to braking performance. I reckon they were better than my current RS2 brakes. There wasn't any hassle sourcing parts really - everything is off the shelf.
                      Now RS2'less

Cheers for the input guys. I didn't fancy going somewhere like qst and blowing the entire budget on a set of 'performance' discs and pads.

I see what you mean Paul. I got a price for a new bomb today. £260?!
Anyway, I tested the bomb tonight, it seems to take about 40 pumps for the pedal to go solid. So I guess that's ok. Right? Or was that when my leg seized up? It's a tad chilly out there.

Which/where is the hydraulic return pipe, for testing the brake servo?

I think the bulge in one of my brake hoses is probably helping the sponginess!

Any solution to the lack of bite, juddering, and fade after any more than a couple of corners, would be good.

I like the sound of 90quattrocoupe’s idea.
What’s this about the “1mm off the pins” and “VW 400mm long hardline bent to fit”.
Are 996 callipers ok to use with the 30mm discs? What sort of pads would I need?

Don't drive it with a bulge in the pipe. If you do an emergency stop it will burst!!!!!
The pins are on the inside of the caliper and will catch on the disc if you don't fettle them.
400mm hardline is the stiff brake pipe from the caliper to the mounting lug on the hub where it joins the rubber covered flexi brake pipe.
Just don't drive it with that pipe in that condition.
Kingdoms are run by Kings, Dictatorships are run by Dictators.
